Draft of Poster 1

This photo shows the basic layout of our poster. I centered the film name in big text at the top to make sure it is the most noticeable part. then i put the cast names at the bottom as i have seen many film posters do this. A slogan may be included and put above the cast along with the main photo in the next draft.

Industry research

This is a selection of the most important film facts for recent years. This will help greatly with the design and production of the poster and magazine cover in order to advertise the film to the best of its ability by showing how much advertising is needed (roughly) in order to get a film noticed on the market.

  • 646 films were released in the UK in 2012

  • Over 12 new tittles per week

  • Saturday is the most popular night 24.1%

  • Most popular genre is Action 34.5%

  • Horror only 4.4%

  • 300 million pounds spent on print an advertising

Magazine Cover

This is a copy of our magazine cover. It is a cover of SFX magazine with our film as the main article. There is a constant theme used throughout of Red and Black for a very gothic horror effect.

Ancillary Pitch

We are planning to construct a film poster and magazine cover for our horror film. Below is the of example of what we want it to look like.

This is an example of what we want our magazine cover to look like. It uses the main killers face as it is an iconic mask which is instantly recognisable to people and is immediately associated with Scream.

Although it doesn't have a typical horror background and is primarily just the colour red which symbolises blood and gore. Furthermore due to the plain and simple background it draws a lot of attention to the main image of Ghost face.

The next biggest writing on the page (apart from the main title) is the Scream returns writing. This is good as it allows readers to associate the photo with the main article in the magazine. This advetises the main article well and has a font which links consistently through the cover.

Poster analysis

The poster above is a poster for one of our RMA films called 'You're Next'.

Immediately by looking at the poster as a whole, you can tell its for a horror film as it is a very dark poster with a lot of use of shadows and other dark areas to conceal certain parts of the killers and so that the most attention possible is drawn to the white maskes of the killers as they stand out due to a contrast of white on a black dark background.

The text usage is also very effective as it the original colouring of it is also white. This means it has a similar effect to the masks as it is white, it stands out on the dark background and brings the text into the foreground of the poster. The text has been covered in blood Staines which show up very well due to the colour contrast of Red on White. It then reinforces the theme of horror as it links to the machete that the killer at the back is holding which implies that is were the blood came from.

The use of short, and effective text is very good at get people's attention and giving them a vague idea of what the film is about and what it's themes are. The text saying "THEY WILL HUNT YOU" is effective as it engages people looking at it by using the word "YOU". Also by having the font bold and in capitals, it stands out to show its importance and it is easy for people to read. Then the writing for "YOU'RE NEXT" is in the same font but even bigger by showing its importance in relation to the film itself, not to mention it also yet again connects viewers with the "YOU'RE".

Overall I will use techniques and inspirations from this in order for me and Harry to create our ancillary task film poster.

You have some good audience feedback. You need to evidence your contribution to construction to protect your grade.

Trailer Draft 2 Audience Feedback

The photo below shows the feedback that we got from our trailer draft.
The main points of improvement were that we could use filters to make the trailer as a whole more dark, gothic, and spooky, as well as cutting out unnecessary music at the end to shorten the trailer as a whole.

Well done Jack. You have some good shots at the start and I really like the ending. You need to consider the middle part and how successful this is in terms of the criteria – camera etc. Is it horror? Do you have enough content as the middle has lots of repetition?

Well done Jack. You are working well and are meeting your deadlines. However, I don't think your blog posts reflect the amount of time spent on your project. Please keep updating using a range of ICT.

Audience feedback

Today we did peer assessment for our trailers in our class and we got feedback on our trailer, here is a paragraph of all our feedback we got summed up.

One point was that people really like the soundtrack, especially with the siren effect. However they said that it needs to be fitted in better in sync with the trailer, so that the heartbeat fits in with what going on with the screenplay. Another positive point is that people liked the final scene of the trailer as it is scary, but would be better with a loud sound effect to make it jumpy. There was some critical feedback on our trailer as well which was helpful as it means we will find it easier to improve our trailer. They were some comments such as some parts of the dialogue could do with being louder. Also we may need more shot diversity as the shots of people running away can be very repetitive. Furthermore the writing is good, but may need to be clearer as it can be hard to read at times. Finally we may need to add some scenes at the start explaining what the people are doing and who they are hunting.

Update

Today was a very productive day for me and Harry. We did a lot of filming with one of our cast members, Adam, and Harry as the killer as well. The shots all came out really nicely in the ways we wanted them to. We have added music to the trailer as a rough estimate as to what it will sound like, and we have started editing and organising the clips we filmed today.

We then got feedback from our teacher and have come up with a work plan so we can do the improvements she suggested, as we have to give more of a background to all four of our characters. Therefore me and Harry plan to do more filming of the four 'hunters' so the audience get and insight into who they are and who/why they are hunting.

Update

So far, me and Harry have done a very large amount of filming for our trailer and the majority of it has been completed. We have also done a lot of editing with the clips we have and have come up with a first draft of the structure for our trailer. However due to technical difficulties with out camera, not all the clips that were filmed have been fully transferred to the Mac, so we are going to retry this on Monday and try and get more clips for editing, as well as finishing all filming for the trailer hopefully.

Well done for all your planning preperation. You have some good ideas regarding mes. You need to do a bit more research into camera and editing to then feed into your own trailer.
